Davide Formisano

Davide Formisano was born in Milan in 1974. He graduated with the highest marks plus distinction under the guide of M° C. Tabarelli, thus perfecting his abilities with Bruno Cavallo, Jean-Claude Gérard at Stuttgart Musikhochschule and Aurèle Nicolet in Basel.

Still very young he gained the first prize at ‘Galileo Galilei’ competition and at Stresa International Competition obtaining high honours in all the major international competitions. At just seventeen, he took part in the ‘Jean Pierre Rampal Concourse’ in Paris, gaining the ‘Prix Special du Jury’. During the next few years he won a prize at Kobe International Flute Competition, 1st prize at the Budapest Flute Competition and 2nd prize (1st not assigned) at the outstanding ARD Concourse in Munich.

Through his success he very early played with the most important european youth orchestras like ‘Orchestra Giovanile Italiana’, ‘Schleswig-Holstein Festivalorchester’ or ‘European Youth Orchestra’. It was the first time he got in contact with great conductors like Lorin Maazel, Kurt Sanderling or Carlo Maria Giulini.

1995 he became solo flutist at ‘Philharmonischen Staatsorchesters Hamburg’ and just one year later took the same position at ‘Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra’.

The following year he returned back to his hometown Milan as solo flutist of ‘Teatro alla Scala’ and ‘Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala’. There he met and worked with the most great conductors of the world like  Zubin Mehta, Wolfgang Savallisch, Valery Gergiev, Chung Myung Wun, Georges Prêtre, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly or Riccardo Muti.

To focus on his solo career and his teaching activities he left the orchestra in 2012.

Davide Formisano perfectly combined his role as Soloist and Professor. He was guest of many international famous festivals and concerts series like ‘Amici della musica Firenze’, ‘Serate della Musica Milano’, ‘Festival di Ravenna’, ‘Settimane Musicali di Stresa’, ‘Accademia Musicale Chigiana Siena’, ‘Emilia Romagna Festival’, ‘Festival MITO Milano-Torino’, ‘Lucerne Festival’, ‘Engadin Festival’, ‘Les nuits musicale de Nice’, ‘Schleswig-Holstein Festival’, ‘Rheingau Festival’, ‘Festival der Deutschen Flötengesellschaft’, ‘International Music Festival Fuji’, ‘Seoul Arts Center’, ‘Il Sistema Venezuela’, ‘Spring Festival Budapest’ or ‘National Flute Convention NFA’. 

There he played together with musicians like  Bruno Canino, Radovan Vlatkovic, Phillip Moll, Sergio Azzolini, Fabio Biondi, James Galway, Louisa Prandina, Emmanuel Ceysson, Thomas Sanderling, Riccardo Muti oder Daniel Barenboim and preformed as soloist with such orchesteras as ‘Symphonieorchester des Bayrischen Rundfunks’, ‘Dresdner Kapellsolisten’, ‘Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala’, ‘I Cameristi della Scala’, ‘Sankt Petersburger Philharmonikern’, ‘Runkfunk Orchester Basel’, ‘Badischen Staatskapelle Karlsruhe’ or ‘Ensemble der Tonhalle Zürich’.

Recently his debut recording ‘PORTRAIT’ for the lable ‘Deutsche Grammophon’ was released. Followed by a tour through Japan, where his concert at ‘Oji-Hall’ was broadcasted at ‘NHK- radio’. He received highest valuations and critics of many international music journals or music pages.

Since 2007 Davide Formisano is Professor at ‘Musikhochschule Stuttgart’.

He performs with a Muramatsu 24k All Gold flute.
